A tanker leaking fuel oil closed Montauk Highway in Southampton in both directions for most of Wednesday morning, a spokesman for the Southampton Town police said.

The westbound lane between Flying Point and Old Mill roads was reopened after noon, according to town police. However, the eastbound lane remained closed because of the spill.

Police and the state Department of Conservation fuel cleanup team are at the site, the spokesman said.

The leak was reported around 7:45 a.m.
