Service on the Montauk branch of the Long Island Rail Road was temporarily suspended early Wednesday morning after a train struck a car parked near the tracks in North Bellport, a railroad official said.
No one was injured in the collision, railroad spokeswoman Marjorie Anders said.
She said the car was unoccupied. Suffolk County police said the driver apparently fled and said Metropolitan Transportation Authority police were trying to find that person.
The collision occurred at 5:09 a.m. and involved the 4:37 a.m. train from Speonk, which was scheduled to arrive in Babylon at 5:37 a.m.
It occurred about 100 yards east of North Dunton Avenue, Anders said.
Police said Montauk Highway was briefly closed between North Dunton and Gazzola Drive. The road has since been reopened, officials said.
The shutdown affected three trains, Anders said. The 4:37 a.m. train involved in the crash was canceled, she said. Two later trains were running up to an hour and 20 minutes late.
