A Montauk woman died after her vehicle collided head-on with a gas truck Tuesday in East Hampton Town, local police said.

Janis Hewitt, 63, was heading east on Route 27 in Montauk when her Chrysler PT Cruiser veered into oncoming traffic and struck an International Harvester gas truck just before 12:40 p.m., East Hampton Town police said.

Hewitt was pronounced dead at the scene by investigators from the Suffolk County medical examiner’s office, police said.

The truck driver, David Kelleher, 42, of Mastic, was treated at Southampton Hospital and released, police said.

Detectives and the medical examiner will investigate the cause of the accident, but no crime was involved, police said.

Suffolk police officers from the motor carrier section conducted safety checks on the truck, while town police impounded Hewitt’s car for a safety inspection, authorities said.

East Hampton Town police ask anyone with information on the crash to call 631-537-7575.
