The cops weren't about to wait for the cows to come home.

Instead, they went out and got them -- and forced them back to life on the farm.

Suffolk County police rounded up a herd of 18 to 20 cattle that bolted from the Suffolk County Farm and Education Center in Yaphank Tuesday night and were spotted headed for the Long Island Expressway.

A Suffolk correction officer saw the bovine herd at about 7:30 p.m., police said.

Moo-ved to action, he immediately called for backup.

No cows were injured in the subsequent roundup.

By 8:45 p.m., the cows had all come home.
