Officers who went to arrest a Southampton man after a narcotics investigation Tuesday found he had more drugs -- $2,000 worth, to be exact, police said.

John H. Ward III, 28, of Hillcrest Avenue, was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance -- a charge stemming from the original investigation, Southampton Town police said. They did not announce charges stemming from the additional possession, saying their investigation was continuing.

Ward is facing arraignment on June 22 in Southampton Town Justice Court.

Police said Ward was arrested in Flanders and was found to have more than five ounces of marijuana, worth about $2,000.

They said the arrest came after an investigation into an incident on May 1 when Ward fled his vehicle, leaving behind "a quantity" of crack.
