The winter that wouldn't end still won't end -- even though it's the first week of spring.

A mix of rain and snow changed over to snow and "areas of freezing drizzle" Wednesday evening, making for a slushy accumulation of 1 to 2 inches of snow, the National Weather Service said.

A winter weather advisory for Long Island remains in effect until 10 a.m. Thursday.

Morning commuters can expect wet, sometimes slippery roads and puddles in flood-prone areas. The Long Island Rail Road released a statement early Thursday, advising riders to "use caution when entering/exiting trains, and on staircases and station platforms."

The storm is expected to pass through the area by mid-morning, the National Weather Service said. Temperatures will rise to highs in the mid-40s with 10 to 15 mph winds.

Tonight, expect lows once again in the 20s and sunny and partly cloudy skies Friday and through the weekend with highs in the 40s.
