Mosquito spraying set for Fire Island
The Suffolk County Department of Public Works plans to spray for mosquitoes on Fire Island Tuesday evening.
Ground spraying of the pesticide Anvil will take place, weather permitting, between 6 and 10 p.m. on all streets in Davis Park and Point O' Woods.
The county sprays annually to control the population of adult mosquitoes.
The chance of experiencing ill health effects are low, but the county recommends children and pregnant women avoid exposure. If possible, stay inside or avoid the spraying area for at least 30 minutes after treatment, and close windows and doors and vents of window air conditioning units.
If you come in direct contact with the spray, protect your eyes and wash exposed skin.
The county said residents may also want to:
Bring pet food and water dishes inside and cover ornamental fish ponds during the spray period.
Pick homegrown fruits before spraying and rinse thoroughly with water before cooking or eating.
Bring laundry and small toys inside before spraying. If exposed to spray, wash with detergent and water.
