Mosquito-spraying starts in Fire Island
Suffolk County Public Works officials plan to spray mosquito-killing pesticides in Fire Island and Smith Point County Park this week in an effort to keep the bugs at bay.
Officials plan to spray Anvil, a pesticide that contains the active ingredient sumithrin, from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Wednesday night, Thursday night and Friday morning on all village streets in Ocean Bay Park on Fire Island.
Another Anvil treatment is scheduled for 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Thursday on all village streets in Fire Island Pines, Water Island, Atlantique and Summer Club on Fire Island.
From 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. Friday, officials plan to spray Scourge, a pesticide that contains the active ingredient resmethrin, in the campgrounds and marina of Smith Point Park, excluding wetlands and buffer areas next to water.
During spraying and for 30 minutes afterward, residents should stay indoors and close doors, windows and window air-conditioner vents. Officials recommended that children and pregnant women take extra care to avoid exposure.
If exposure is unavoidable, residents should protect their eyes and wash exposed skin, officials said. Exposed clothing should be washed separately from other laundry, they said, and if the spray gets into eyes, they should be rinsed immediately.
