A Suffolk County Police Department motorcycle patrol officer was taken to a hospital after an apparent one-vehicle accident Friday afternoon in Bay Shore.

Police said the officer, whose identity was not released, was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore with non-life-threatening injuries after the accident on Fifth Avenue at 12:31 p.m. Police said an accident investigation is under way, but said preliminary indications are that the officer was not involved in a collision.

The officer is assigned to the Highway Patrol Bureau's Motorcycle Section. Police said initial indications are he suffered a broken hand and other minor injuries.

After the accident, police closed Fifth Avenue between Brook Avenue and Spur Drive South. The street reopened at 2:05 p.m., police said.
