Motorcyclist Anees Khan, of Huntington, dies after crash with SUV in Melville

A motorcyclist was killed in Melville during Friday’s evening rush hour after he tried to pass an SUV but hit its bumper and was thrown off the motorcycle, which caught fire, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.
The crash happened as the motorcyclist, 38-year-old Anees Khan, of Huntington, riding a southbound 2023 Ducati on Round Swamp Road near Hilltop Drive, tried to pass a 2022 Kia Seltos around 6:45 p.m. Khan struck the Kia's right rear bumper, the department wrote in a news release.
He was declared dead at the crash scene, the release said.
The Kia driver and his passenger, both 85, are from Plainview. Neither was hurt.
Motorcycle riders lack the protection of an enclosed vehicle, so they're more likely to be injured or killed in a crash. The federal government estimates that per mile traveled, a person on a motorcycle is nearly 22 times more likely to die than if in a car, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
