Motorcyclist hurt after hitting deer in Southold
A motorcyclist was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center late Tuesday after a collision with a deer in Southold, police said.
Officials said the injuries were non-life-threatening.
The deer apparently ran off after the collision, police said.
Southold Town police Capt. Frank Kruszeski said the accident occurred at 11:27 p.m. on County Road 48 near the intersection with Kenny's Road.
Police said the motorcyclist, John Kujawski, 49, of Southold, was headed eastbound on Route 48 when the deer ran across the road headed north.
The force of the collision knocked Kujawski off the bike.
Police said he suffered a shoulder injury and said first aid was administered at the scene by the Southold Fire Department Rescue Squad before Kujawski was airlifted.
Police said collisions between vehicles and deer are not uncommon in the area.
"There are tons of them," Kruszeski said. "Drivers should be aware."
