A Shirley man was killed Sunday night after he lost control of his motorcycle, veered across oncoming lanes of traffic and struck a tree on the other side of the road in Manorville, Suffolk police said.

Joseph Hancock, 34, was riding his Suzuki east on Mill Road -- a meandering two-lane road that runs for about 4.5 miles between Manorville and Calverton -- when he lost control and crashed into an area of brush and trees, police said.

He was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where he was declared dead.

The crash occurred about 7:35 p.m. east of David Terry Road, police said. No other vehicles were involved.
