A motorcyclist from Riverhead who may have run a red light was killed in a collision with a Jeep Thursday night on County Road 58 in Riverhead, police said.

The Jeep driver was charged with driving with a revoked license and an insurance lapse, Riverhead Town police said.

The crash occurred just after 9 p.m. at the intersection of Kroemer Avenue, just west of the Riverhead Raceway.

Police said the motorcyclist, 37, whose identity has not been released, was traveling east on his 1994 Honda when Gregory Stanisci, 19, of Riverhead, traveling west in a 2000 Jeep, tried to make a left onto Kroemer, striking the motorcycle almost head-on.

The motorcyclist was ejected from the bike and collided with a 2008 Honda sedan that was stopped on Kroemer, police said. Neither Stanisci or the Honda driver, Ryan Foley, 29, of Aquebogue, were injured.

Police said a preliminary investigation indicates the motorcyclist failed to yield the right of way, running a red light.

Police said Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance took the motorcyclist to Peconic Bay Medical Center, but he died a short time later.

Stanisci was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, police said. He was released on station house bail. Arraignment details were not immediately available.

Police are asking anyone who may have information on the accident to contact them at 631-727-4500.
