A motorcyclist who was critically injured when his bike crashed into a car on Sunrise Highway Sunday in East Islip has died, police said Monday.

Christopher Gonzalez, 21, of Medford, was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore with serious head injuries after the crash on eastbound Sunrise at 7:08 p.m.

He died on Monday, Suffolk County police said.

A passenger on the motorcycle, Samantha Negron, 21, of Patchogue, suffered serious physical injuries and remained hospitalized at Stony Brook University Hospital Monday.

Police said the other driver, identified as Mary Paniccia, 63, of Shirley, and her 13-year-old grandson were not hurt.

Police said that Paniccia was headed east in her 2001 Mitsubishi Galant when she was struck by the 2012 Yamaha just west of Exit 46, Carleton Avenue. The road was closed in the area for several hours for investigation and both the motorcycle and car were impounded for safety checks.

The investigation is continuing and police are asking anyone with information regarding the crash to call the Vehicular Crime Unit at 631-852-6555.
