The driver of a luxury sports car died after losing control on Route 25A in Mount Sinai and hitting a Jeep head-on Tuesday evening, Suffolk police said.

Charles Dassaro, 33, of Rocky Point, who was behind the wheel of a 2017 McLaren 570, was pronounced dead where he crashed, near West Gate Drive, the police said.

Dassaro had been heading east at about 6:35 p.m., the police said, when he crossed into the westbound lanes.

His front seat passenger, Augusto Fernandez, 35, of Port Jefferson Station, was flown by the police in a helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries, police said.

The driver of the 2019 Jeep Wrangler, Christopher Caputo, 20, of Mount Sinai, was taken to the same hospital by ambulance, also with serious injuries, according to the police.

The two passengers in the Jeep — Nick Torres, 21, of Mount Sinai, and James Snider, 20, of Mount Sinai — were taken to local hospitals after suffering minor injuries, police said.

The McLaren and the Jeep were impounded to undergo safety checks, police said.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact the Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652.
