Rescuers pull contractor out of mud hole in Dix Hills

A contractor got trapped in mud while waterproofing a Dix Hills home on Friday and about four dozen emergency workers helped free him after two and a half hours, officials said.

Trevor Borders, 22, of Bay Shore, was digging on the side of a Woodfern Court house’s foundation when he started to sink about 10:10 a.m., Suffolk County police said in a news release.

When Borders tried to free himself, he fell in waist-deep about 8 feet into the ground, police said.

Suffolk police’s Emergency Service Unit, medical crisis team and other officers responded, along with the Dix Hills, Huntington Manor, and East Farmingdale fire departments, police said.

He was covered in mud up to his waist against the side of the house when first responders began arriving, said Steve Silverman, spokesman for the Dix Hills fire department.

There were about 50 rescuers on the scene from different agencies, Silverman said.

Using a pulley and harness system, the rescuers pulled Borders out about 12:40 p.m., officials said.

“All the agencies had specialized equipment and they worked well together to remove the gentleman from the hole,” Silverman said.

Borders, who was conscious and alert throughout, was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip for evaluation, officials said.

“He seems to be in good condition,” Silverman said.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration was notified, police said.
