'National Bat Week' to be celebrated on Fire Island, in Patchogue
Just in time for Halloween, the National Park Service will celebrate bats at events on Fire Island and in Patchogue.
“National Bat Week” will feature special programs from Monday through Halloween at various locations around Long Island and in New York City, the park service said in a news release.
Celebrations include “Creatures of the Night” at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Fire Island National Seashore’s Wilderness Visitor Center, adjacent to Smith Point County Park in Shirley, and “Halloween Happenings,” at 3 p.m. Oct. 31 at the Patchogue-Medford Library in Patchogue.
“Bats are fascinating creatures that should be celebrated,” Dalton Brauer, a Student Conservation Association intern who monitors bats for the parks service, said in a statement. “These events are a great way to celebrate the species we’re working to protect.”
Bat Week also will be celebrated at the Central Park Zoo at noon on Thursday.
