Jay hangs out at the Islip Animal Shelter in Bay Shore on June 16, 2014.

Celebrate National Dog Day the right way -- with a new canine friend.

The Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet Center will offer free dog adoptions on Wednesday to mark National Dog Day.

The town shelter's nonprofit volunteer group Live.Love.Bark Dog Rescue will pay for all dog adoption fees -- which normally cost $111 per dog -- for any eligible applications filed that day for adoptions.

The standard adoption process will apply, including a required notarized letter from the landlords of renters who want to adopt a dog.

"This is a great opportunity for families to come down and celebrate National Dog Day by adopting one of our many amazing dogs currently awaiting their new forever home," Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter said in a news release.

"Not only are you saving money, but you're also saving the life of your next best friend."

The adoption fees cover the cost of spaying or neutering the dog, vaccines, a town dog license and microchipping. There are about 80 dogs living at the shelter and ready for adoption. To see photos of some of the dogs, visit the shelter's Facebook page at facebook.com/islipanimals or meet them at the shelter at 210 South Denver Ave. in Bay Shore.
