A fire burned through the roof of a garage in Nesconset on Saturday night, threatening the attached home, before firefighters were able to control the flames, fire officials said.

The fire, at a home on Nichols Road, was reported at around 9:30 p.m., said Doug Sneider, first assistant chief of the Nesconset Fire Department.

When crews arrived, they found that the fire was burning in the two-car garage and had begun to burn the attic and eaves, Sneider said.

The fire took about an hour and a half to control, Sneider said. A lowered ceiling, used for storage, in the garage impeded firefighters' progress, Sneider said, but firefighters were able to save the main frame of the house. The roof of the garage collapsed.

There were no injuries, and no indication so far of what caused the fire. Sneider said that the two owners of the home had gotten out before crews arrived, and firefighters were able to rescue the third occupant -- a cat.
