A New Jersey man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated early Saturday in Cutchogue after a police officer saw the car he was driving run over a curb and grass, Southold Town police said.

A police officer stopped Paul Faraguna, 49, of Berkeley Heights, N.J., about 12:10 a.m. as Faraguna was heading south on New Suffolk Road. The officer, while interviewing Faraguna, smelled a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, police said.

Faraguna failed tests for alcohol use that were given at roadside, police said.

He also was charged with failure to stay in the correct lane.

Faraguna was being held at Southold police headquarters pending arraignment in Southold Town Justice Court.
