Fair Trade Winds, a new store in the Stony Brook Village Center, features handmade products from developing nations.
The owner, Susan Conard of Setauket, only buys products from wholesalers who meet standards set by Fair Trade Federation, an international trade association that promotes “a fair trade marketplace.” Conard said that means a fair portion of proceeds must return directly to manufacturing countries, and that workers are paid a living wage.
Among the store’s products: jewelry, artwork, leather goods, pottery, coffees and teas, among a variety of goods.
The craft work is done all over the world, South America, India, Asia, the Middle East, as well as the United States, Conard said.
Conard opened the store in late September. It’s Fair Trade Winds' third location; her brother owns locations in Bar Harbor, Maine, and Fairfax, Va.
