A Newfield High School student suffered second-degree facial burns Tuesday during an Earth science class experiment with alcohol and water that flared up, Suffolk police and school officials said.

The school immediately called 911 and notified the student's guardians, Middle Country school district Superintendent Roberta Gerold said in a statement.

The unidentified student was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for evaluation, police and the district said. The student's condition was not immediately available. No other student or staff member was injured, Gerold said.

Police said the Selden school was not evacuated.
