Several Newsday journalists shared top honors in the New York State Associated Press Association's 2009-2010 competitions for writing, photography and graphics.

Staff writer Denise M. Bonilla was awarded first place for depth reporting for the series "Alzheimer's: The Love and the Heartbreak," which profiled six families caring for loved ones with the disease. Bonilla and staff photographer J. Conrad Williams Jr., who shot the series, also won first place for multimedia packages. Williams was awarded second place for photo essay or series for his work on the Alzheimer's series.

Artist Rod Eyer won two prizes for his informational graphics work in the non-spot news category. "Guide to the Eagle" was awarded first place and "Six Fixes" won third place.

James T. Madore, Newsday's Albany bureau chief, won second place for beat reporting with his stories on government and politics in the state capitol.

Newsday staff also won second place for features with "Summer of 69," a series that examined the Vietnam War, the Apollo moon landing, Woodstock and the Mets' miracle season through the eyes of Long Islanders who remembered that pivotal year.
