A truck belonging to Newsday was hit in Blue Point early Sunday by another vehicle whose driver then fled the scene, leaving the truck's operator with serious injuries, Suffolk police said.

Newsday employee Douglas Piekarski, 46, of Sound Beach was driving a 1999 International truck west on Montauk Highway at Homan Avenue on his regular route at 4:35 a.m. when his truck was hit by a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu traveling east, police said. The impact caused Piekarski's truck to flip over, police said.

The driver of the Chevrolet abandoned his car and fled from the scene, police said.

Piekarski was left with serious but nonlife-threatening injuries, police said. He was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue for treatment.

Police ask anyone with information on this case to contact the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-220-TIPS.
