Drivers warned about increased deer activity

Nissequogue Village officials are warning of increased deer activity during the mating season, which lasts from October through January. 

In a notice to drivers posted on the village website, officials asked drivers to take particular care during dusk and dawn hours, when deer are most likely to cross roads, and to keep alert at all times for movement at the roadside. Deer often move in groups, so drivers who spot one should expect more in the area. Drivers should use headlights and their bright lights. Reflection off deers’ eyes will show up as lighted dots.

If you do hit a deer, the notice said, pull to the roadside to assess the situation and activate your hazard lights. If the deer is dead or injured, call 911 to contact the village police, and your insurance company if needed.
