Four adults and a child escaped uninjured Monday morning as a fire destroyed a Mastic Beach home, Suffolk County police and fire officials said.
A call for a fire on President Road was received at about 12:45 a.m., police said, and when emergency and fire officials arrived at the scene all the occupants, including a 3-year-old child, were safely outside the building.
Andrew Brofman, chief fire marshal of Mastic Beach, said firefighters had the blaze under control in about two hours and fully extinguished in about four.
Firefighters from Mastic Beach responded, with the Mastic and Brookhaven departments providing assistance, Brofman said.
"The fire started in the basement but it is not suspicious in nature," Brofman said.
Brofman said the one-story house was destroyed and that firefighters had a difficult time getting into the building because of furniture and materials stacked near windows and doors.
"It was a real challenge for them," he said.
