The longtime mayor of North Haven has been arrested and charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated after crashing her car in the Sag Harbor Village and registering a blood-alcohol concentration more than four times the legal limit, according to court documents.

Laura M. Nolan, 54, of Sag Harbor, had a breath analyzer reading of 0.34 percent following the Friday crash. A result of 0.08 percent is considered drunken driving, and 0.18 percent is the limit for aggravated drunken driving.

Nolan was driving a 1998 black Mercedes west on Bay Avenue when she crashed into another vehicle at the corner of Bay and Main streets at 3:52 p.m. Friday. A police officer at the scene witnessed the accident, which law enforcement officials characterized as minor. The occupants of the vehicle were not injured.

According to the police report, Nolan was glassy-eyed, had slurred speech and smelled of alcohol. She was unable to perform field sobriety tests "due to her level of intoxication," the report noted. She consented to the breath test at Sag Harbor's police station and was later taken to Southampton Hospital for medical evaluation.

Nolan was held overnight at the precinct. The following day she pleaded not guilty in Sag Harbor Village Court and was released on her own recognizance, according to court papers. A court date has not yet been set.

Nolan's attorney, Edward Burke Jr. of Sag Harbor, said he is awaiting discovery on the case, but added that Nolan will seek treatment.

"She is highly motivated to address this situation and deal with this unfortunate incident," he said.

Nolan's position as mayor is up for election in June.

Calls to Nolan were not returned Wednesday.
