Suffolk County police said they are investigating a two-car crash in North Lindenhurst that injured three people on Wednesday.

First Squad detectives said Rubel Canales was driving a 2003 Infiniti G35 north on Straight Path, near Maple Drive. As he attempted to pass another vehicle on the left side, he crossed over into oncoming traffic and struck a 2005 Toyota Prius at about 5:20 p.m.

Canales, 56, of North Lindenhurst, had serious leg and internal injuries and was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital where he is listed in critical but stable condition.

The driver of the Prius, Juan Torres, 56, of Copiague, had head, neck and back injuries. His passenger, Wilda Gonzalez-Munez, 23, also of Copiague, had a leg injury that police said was not life-threatening.

They were taken by ambulance to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks, police said.

Detectives ask anyone with more information to call the First Squad at 631-854-8152.
