State transportation officials announced the opening on Wednesday of two new ramps connecting the Northern State Parkway and Route 231 in Dix Hills.

The Department of Transportation said in a news release Tuesday that one ramp will allow southbound traffic from Route 231 to enter the eastbound Northern State Parkway and the other will permit traffic from eastbound Northern State Parkway to enter Route 231.

The ramps will be operational on Wednesday, officials said, adding that the old ramps will be permanently closed and signs will be in place to alert motorists of the new pattern.

Officials have said the $15.7 million project should increase safety and improve traffic flow.

In addition, the Exit 42N ramp from eastbound Northern State Parkway to northbound Route 231 will close to finish construction of another new exit ramp.  In the interim, motorists traveling that route must exit at the new Exit 42S ramp and make a left turn at the reconfigured traffic signal.
