The Northern State Parkway will close Friday night to repaint faded roadway markings at the Route 110 entrance and exit ramps, and on a temporary bridge erected as part of a multimillion-dollar improvement project in Melville.

The project began last May to replace the parkway overpass, its entrance and exit ramps, and to widen Route 110 to improve safety and traffic flow, officials said.

When finished, there will be three travel lanes and shoulders in each direction on Route 110, the overpass will be raised to provide better clearance for trucks and the intersection of the highway and Old Country Road will be upgraded. Improvements will also be made along Route 110 for pedestrians and cyclists, with added turnouts for bus stops.

The state Department of Transportation awarded the $55.7 million contract to Grace Industries of Plainview last year.

A temporary bridge is carrying traffic over Route 110 so drivers aren't inconvenienced during construction of the new permanent structure, officials said. Road markings have faded on the temporary bridge because of high traffic volume.

A crane and other equipment are on site to erect the beams that will support the new bridge deck. As of Wednesday, 15 of 26 beams have been put in place. That work is expected to take about a week to complete.

The overall project is running seven months ahead of schedule, with completion planned by the end of next year, according to the DOT.
