State police continue to investigate a crash that closed the Northern State Parkway in Dix Hills in both directions Monday night, authorities said.

The accident on the eastbound side caused at least one vehicle to roll over, state police said.

One woman was airlifted to a hospital while two men were taken to Huntington Hospital by ambulance, said First Assistant Chief Robert Fling of the Dix Hills Fire Department.

The crash happened shortly before 8:15 p.m. about a quarter-mile west of Deer Park Road, Fling said.

The parkway's eastbound lanes were closed at Exit 41, Wolf Hill Road, and the westbound lanes shut at Exit 42 South, which is Route 231, state police said.

When firefighters arrived, the woman's vehicle was lying across two eastbound lanes, while the other vehicle had careened into the woods, Steve Silverman, a spokesman for the Dix Hills Fire Department, said shortly after leaving the scene.

"There was debris strewn everywhere," Silverman said.

Fling said the two men suffered minor injuries. He said he had gone up to one of the men, who was lying on the road shoulder.

"He wanted to get up and I told him to stay where he was," Fling said.

By Tuesday night, state police had not identified the three people injured in the crash and the woman airlifted to a hospital remained in critical condition, police said. No further details were released by police, who cited the ongoing investigation.
