A Northport man was critically injured early Sunday morning after he lost control of his car and struck a tree in Hauppauge, Suffolk police said.

The driver, Douglas Caldwell, 47, of Layne Way, Northport, was driving a 2005 Nissan east on Veterans Memorial Highway at 4:10 a.m. when witnesses said the vehicle went out of control, police said.

The vehicle went into the center divider, hit a tree and flipped over, police said.

Police and bystanders tried to pull the man from the wreckage, but couldn't. Rescuers from the Commack Fire Department extricated him, police reported.

The driver was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. His vehicle was impounded for a safety check.

Police ask anyone with information about this crash to call the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452.
