NTSB report: Plane in Bohemia crash lost power

The flight instructor involved in a single-engine plane crash near Long Island MacArthur Airport last month reported the engine began to lose power shortly after takeoff, according to crash investigators.
Instructor David Jensen and student pilot Myron David Rowe of Mount Sinai were practicing takeoffs and landings June 5 when the plane's engine began to sputter, Jensen told investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board. The two were seriously hurt in the crash.
The NTSB's preliminary report, dated July 2, says engine trouble developed while the Beechcraft B19 Musketeer Sport was at about 400 feet.
Jensen said he took control of the aircraft, and about 10 seconds after engine power began to degrade, the plane "hit hard, skidded . . . and the cockpit was immediately engulfed in flames."
The plane crashed in Bohemia, where it hit several trees and came to rest against an office building.
Jensen and Rowe were treated for burns at Stony Brook University Medical Center. Rowe was released July 3. No information was available on Jensen.
The aircraft had cleared an annual inspection April 21, investigators said. Its most recent flight, the day before the crash, lasted two hours, the NTSB said.
Jensen is an instructor with Mid-Island Air Service flight school in Ronkonkoma.
