An overflow crowd that included NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly and many colleagues paid their respects Monday night to police officer Patrick Luca, who died in a kayak accident Friday.

The couple who saved Luca's 5-year-old son, Caden, were welcomed with applause, Luca's relatives said. Teddy Sandomenico and his wife, Kathleen Garveson-Sandomenico of Kings Park, "were very gracious, and thank God they were in the right place at the right time," said Michael D'Amico of Wantagh, a New York firefighter whose wife is a cousin of Luca's wife.

D'Amico called Luca "a tremendous person who everybody adored and who adored his kids."

Visiting continues Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at St. James Funeral Home, south chapel, 829 Middle Country Rd., St. James. A funeral Mass will be offered Wednesday at 9:45 a.m. at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, 280 E. Main St., Smithtown. Donations to the Patrick Luca Memorial Fund, which was still being established, were requested in lieu of flowers
