Oakdale house fire injures at least one person, officials say

Firefighters battling a house fire Sunday afternoon in Oakdale found an unconscious man inside who was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital in serious condition, officials said.

The man was found shortly after noon in an upstairs kitchen of the two-story Connetquot Road home, West Sayville Fire Chief Todd Gray said.

The blaze’s cause is under investigation by the Suffolk County Police Department’s Arson Squad and the Town of Islip fire marshal. Authorities have not released the man’s identity.

“One occupant of the house was removed by firefighters from the West Sayville Fire Department and transported via Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital in serious condition,” Assistant Suffolk County Police Commissioner Justin S. Meyers said in a statement.

About 50 firefighters from West Sayville, Sayville, Bohemia, Bayport and Great River arrived at the home to find extensive fire at the front of the house near its garage, Gray said.

They extinguished the flames within a half-hour, he said. The home has significant fire, smoke and water damage. No firefighters were injured.

“A victim was being airlifted to Stony Brook hospital and I hope whoever it is recovers and there is no fatality,” Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter said after being briefed on the fire.

“It’s a tragedy any time of year, but on Christmas Eve [it] exacerbates it to another level,” Carpenter said.
