Officer injured responding to Bay Shore call
A Suffolk County police officer responding to a call Wednesday morning at a home in Bay Shore had to be airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center after a charging dog knocked him down, injuring his head in the fall, police said.
The officer, assigned to the Third Precinct, was not identified. Police said he was treated at Stony Brook and released.
The injury occurred at a home on Fifth Avenue just after 11:15 a.m., police said.
It was not clear what type of dog was involved. The incident proved to be noncriminal, police said.
A police spokeswoman said that, on arrival, "a dog charged the officer and he was knocked down, injuring his head." The airlift and hospital check were "precautionary," police said.
