A state park police cruiser responding to an overturned vehicle itself overturned Wednesday on the Robert Moses Causeway.

But police officials told Newsday the officer driving the unit walked away from the harrowing crash uninjured.

The vehicle crashed on the northbound Robert Moses Causeway near the Montauk Highway exit in West Islip at 10:22 a.m., state park police said.

The circumstances surrounding the crash were not immediately clear. The identity of the officer was not released.

State Police and park police officials said the officer was responding to a call of a crash that had resulted in an overturned car about five minutes earlier.

State Police spokesman Frank Bandiero said the driver in that crash suffered minor injuries and was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip.

Bandiero said both drivers were wearing their seat belts, adding: "This is one of those where maybe you're not walking away from either crash if you're not wearing one."
