Officers, suspect injured after car chase ends in crash
A short vehicle pursuit in North Bellport early Tuesday morning ended up with two officers injured and a suspect under arrest after he crashed into a police car, police said.
Police have not released the name of the suspect, who also was injured in the crash. Charges are pending.
The two officers were not seriously injured, Suffolk County police said, but were taken to Stony Brook Universtiy Hospital for treatment. The suspect was at Brookhaven Hospital.
Police said the incident began when officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop on Michigan Avenue in North Bellport at about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.
They said the suspect “refused to pull over” — and, instead, drove off with a marked police unit in pursuit.
Near the end of what was termed “a short pursuit” police said that on Bellport Avenue the suspect swerved his vehicle into one of the police cars chasing him, causing a crash and injuring the officer. The second officer was injured, police said, when he crashed his cruiser into a parked car while attempting to avoid the collision.
Police would not say why the traffic stop was initiated, citing the on-going investigation.
