Officials: Residents displaced by fire in Brookhaven

Firefighters from six departments and crews from South Country Ambulance responded to an early morning blaze that displaced more than a half-dozen apartment residents in Brookhaven on Friday, Suffolk County fire officials said.

Officials said the fire at the South Country Road commercial property, which includes a row of stores and attached apartments, was reported at 2:26 a.m. Volunteers from Brookhaven, Mastic, Bellport, Hagerman, Yaphank and Ridge responded to the scene and, under the command of Brookhaven Chief Tom Connors, had the fire under control at 3:23 a.m., officials told Newsday.

Seven residents, along with three dogs, escaped the blaze without injuries, South Country Ambulance Chief Gregory Miglino Jr. said. He said two other dogs were missing.

Officials said the Red Cross also responded to the scene to provide assistance to residents and that the cause of the fire is under investigation by the Suffolk County police Arson Squad and the Town of Brookhaven fire marshal.
