Officials: Residents evacuated from Huntington Station fire

More than a dozen residents were safely evacuated from a residential fire Wednesday morning that caused extensive damage to apartments in Huntington Station, fire officials said.
About 50 firefighters and 10 trucks from Huntington Manor, Huntington, Greenlawn, Melville, Dix Hills, Commack and Halesite responded to the scene on New York Avenue, between 10th and 11th streets, after being alerted to the call at 6:51 a.m., a Huntington Manor Fire Department spokesman said.
Firefighters and Suffolk police evacuated 15 residents safely and without injury and, under the direction of Huntington Manor First Assistant Chief Jon Hoffman, had the fire under control at 7:44 a.m., the spokesman said.
The two-story building is located between a line of storefronts along New York Avenue and the spokesman, Steve Silverman, said the blaze caused “extensive damage to the building and apartments on the first and second floors.”
The Suffolk County police Arson Squad and Huntington Town Fire Marshal are investigating the cause of the fire.
