The cause of a late-night fire in Smithtown that sent one resident to the hospital Thursday is under investigation by the Suffolk County police Arson Squad, police said.

Police said the fire at the home on Columbus Avenue was reported at 9:52 p.m.

Fire officials said volunteers from Smithtown, Kings Park, Nesconset and St. James responded to the scene.

Police did not release the identity of the injured resident, but said he was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with burns to his legs.

His condition also was not immediately known Friday, but police described the injuries as "non-life-threatening."
