One dead, one injured in Calverton crash

A fatal crash in Calverton Saturday afternoon killed an elderly driver and seriously hurt the other driver, Riverhead Town Police said.

Authorities declared Ronald R. Edwards Jr., 77, of Ridge, dead at the crash scene, and flew Joanna M. Cammarato, 40, to Stony Brook University Hospital, police said.

The crash happened at about 12:17 p.m. on Route 25, west of Edwards Avenue, when a 1995 Volvo driven by Edwards was involved in a collision with a 2004 Chevy, driven by Cammarato, of Hauppauge.

It was not clear why the accident happened. Police said they are continuing to investigate.
