A pedestrian died Thursday after a vehicle struck him on Sunrise Highway in North Amityville, Suffolk County police

The man was taken to a hospital in critical condition after he was hit about 2:40 p.m. in the eastbound lanes, police said, and was later pronounced dead. The driver stayed at the scene, police said.

The identity of the victim was not released.

Both directions of Sunrise were closed for a few hours between Bayview Avenue and Great Neck Road as First Precinct detectives and crime scene investigators gathered evidence, police said.
