Passenger, 78, dies after Lake Grove car crash

Police are investigating a three-car weekend crash in Lake Grove in which a passenger in one of the cars was killed and three others injured.
Carmela Cardillo, 78, of Smithtown, died at Stony Brook University Medical Center Sunday night from injuries sustained in the 2:32 p.m. accident on Route 347, Suffolk police said Monday.
Joseph Abdenour, 87, the driver of the car Cardillo was riding in, and two others were hospitalized with injuries -- none of them life-threatening, police said. Their conditions were not immediately known Monday.
Police said the crash occurred when Abdenour's 2000 Toyota went out of control while heading east on Route 347. The Toyota crossed into the westbound lane and hit a 2010 Mercedes, which then struck a 2010 Honda. The drivers of the Mercedes and Honda were waiting to turn onto Moriches Road.
Police said all three vehicles were impounded for safety checks, and the investigation is continuing.
