Just after 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2016, Suffolk County police were called to Route 25A and Hallock Landing Road in Rocky Point for an accident involving a sport utility vehicle and a car. Police said one person died in the accident. Credit: Stringer News Service

A woman who was killed when the car she was riding in was struck by an SUV Thursday afternoon in Rocky Point has been identified as Carol Sardegna, 65, of Rocky Point.

Suffolk County police said Sardegna was a passenger in a 1999 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Colleen Gorman, 61, of Rocky Point. The car was hit by a 2014 Toyota Highlander on Route 25A at 4:15 p.m. Sardegna was transported to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

Gorman was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The driver of the Highlander, identified by police as Rachel Stalter, 47, of Port Jefferson, was transported to St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson, along with her 12-year-old daughter. Both were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Police said Stalter was driving the Highlander westbound on Route 25A when her SUV collided with the Malibu, which was turning to go northbound on Hallock Landing Road.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks, police said. Police are asking anyone with information regarding the crash to call Seventh Squad detectives at 631-852-8752.
