Patchogue man accused of sex attack in indictment

A Patchogue man who was on parole for a 2008 burglary was arraigned Wednesday after being indicted on charges he attacked a woman as she walked on Main Street in Patchogue during early morning hours in June, Suffolk authorities said.

Gary Grigg of 265 W. Main St. was arraigned following his indictment on charges of first-degree criminal sexual act and second-degree robbery, according to a news release from Suffolk District Attorney Thomas Spota.

"This was a vicious crime and the victim is suffering from both the trauma of the violence she endured, and from cuts, bruises and a broken nose as she valiantly resisted," Spota said in a statement.

Grigg's Legal Aid attorney could not be reached for comment.

Grigg is accused of sexually assaulting and robbing a woman after dragging her to a grassy area near his home at about 3:15 a.m. on June 29. Prosecutors said he punched the victim repeatedly, breaking her nose and bloodying her mouth before taking $26 from her.

Prosecutors said Grigg was sentenced in 2009 for burglarizing a Bellport house and records show that he was paroled in 2011.

County Court Judge Barbara Kahn set bail at $500,000 cash. Grigg's next court date is Sept. 10.
