Pedestrian critical after Wyandanch accident
A pedestrian in Wyandanch was hit Wednesday by a Jeep when its driver momentarily lost vision after going through a puddle that splashed water over his windshield, Suffolk police said.
Robert Scammocca, 51, of Deer Park, sustained severe head trauma and was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, where he was placed on a ventilator, police said. He was in critical condition late last night, a hospital supervisor said.
He was crossing Acorn Street on the northbound side about 6:13 p.m. when Jeep driver Richard Rubien, 29, of Dix Hills, made a right from Straight Path onto Acorn Street, police said.
The car was impounded for a safety check.
First Squad detectives are asking anyone with information to call them at 631-854-8152.
