Pedestrian critically injured by car in Riverhead

A male pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in Riverhead Monday evening and was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition, hospital and police officials said.

Riverhead police received a call at 5:03 p.m. about a roughly 65-year-old man who was struck as he crossed East Main Street at Riverside Drive, said police officials.

Authorities could not identify the man, officials said.

No charges were filed against the driver of the car, police said, adding that the driver could not avoid the pedestrian.

Joseph Oliver, chief of the Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance, said the pedestrian "was initially found in cardiac arrest and we were able to regain a pulse on scene."

Oliver said police and ambulance personnel assisted in performing CPR and other advanced life support measures on the man. He was transported in critical condition to Peconic Bay Medical Center shortly thereafter, said Oliver.

A spokesman for Peconic Bay said the man was brought to the hospital as a "John Doe" and was transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital.

As of 10:27 p.m., Stony Brook hospital officials said the man was "very critical."
