An pedestrian died early Saturday after he was hit by a car in Brentwood, Suffolk County police said.

The victim, who was not carrying any identification, was walking in the direction of traffic westbound on Second Avenue east of Brentwood Road around 4:30 a.m. when he was struck by a 2001 Toyota Camry, Suffolk County Police Det. Sgt. John Diffley said.

The motorist, Matthew Padilla, 24, of Brentwood, was on his way to work nearby when the crash happened, Diffley said.

Padilla told police he "just did not see the man," Diffley said. That area of Second Avenue has streetlights and is a two-lane road marked with a double-yellow line with a sidewalk along the roadway, Diffley said. It appeared the victim was walking in the roadway, Diffley said.

The injured man was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where he was pronounced dead, police said. No criminality is suspected at this time, Diffley said.

"Hopefully we can identify him," Diffley said of the victim. "We're trying to follow up as best we can."

Padilla's vehicle was impounded for a safety check, police said. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to call Third Squad detectives at 631- 854-8352.
