Pedestrian fatally struck in Hauppauge
A 68-year-old Central Islip man was struck by a van and killed late Thursday night as he walked along Veteran's Highway in Hauppauge, Suffolk County police said.
Police said Ronald Gatto was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash occurred at 9:55 p.m. when a 2003 Chevrolet van driven westbound by Thomas Martin, 59, of Deer Park struck Gatto, who police said was walking in the road.
Police said the van was impounded for a safety inspection but no charges were filed against Martin. Police are asking anyone with information regarding the accident to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential. The investigation is continuing.
